{"id":10747,"date":"2022-04-27T16:07:08","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T16:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/case\/zyad-el-elaimy\/"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:55:22","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T11:55:22","slug":"zyad-el-elaimy","status":"publish","type":"listing","link":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/en\/case\/zyad-el-elaimy\/","title":{"rendered":"Zyad El-Elaimy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>EGYPT: Lawyer Zyad El-Elaimy sentenced to one year in prison<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The OIAD denounces in the strongest possible terms the sentencing of Egyptian lawyer Zyad el-Elaimy to one year in prison for giving an interview to the BBC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Zyad el-Elaimy is a human rights lawyer. He gave an interview to the BBC in which he denounced the political practice of enforced disappearances and the use of torture by the authorities. He was recently sentenced to one year in prison in first instance for \u201cspreading false information with the intention of creating panic among the population and disturbing public order\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD calls on the Egyptian authorities to respect the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/professionalinterest\/pages\/roleoflawyers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers<\/a>, adopted by the United Nations in Havana in 1990, which provide that :<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Lawyers like other citizens are entitled to freedom of expression, belief, association and assembly.
