Aslan Ismayilov, very active in the respect and promotion of social rights, the Rule of Law and the independence of the judiciary, is one of the best known lawyers in Azerbaijan.<\/strong><\/p>\n Disbarred from the Azerbaijani Bar Association (Az\u0259rbaycan Respublikas\u0131 Respublikas\u0131 V\u0259kill\u0259r Kollegiyas\u0131) for his commitments \u2013 officially for having \u201cthreatened and insulted\u201d a judge,\u00a0Aslan Ismayilov<\/a>, had referred the matter to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for violation of Articles 6\u00a71 and 10 of the Convention.<\/p>\n In its decision dated 12 March 2020,\u00a0the ECHR condemned Azerbaijan<\/a>\u00a0for a violation of the right to a fair trial, considering that the disbarment of a lawyer \u201cfor an action which is established to have been carried out on behalf of a client\u201d constituted a violation of Article 6 \u00a7 1 of the Convention.<\/p>\n The OIAD welcomes<\/strong>\u00a0the decision of the European Court of Human Rights concerning the disbarment of Aslan Ismayilov.<\/p>\n The OIAD deplores<\/strong>\u00a0the disciplinary procedures, lacking transparency and objectivity, used as a tool for the control of lawyers by public authorities.<\/p>\n The OIAD is particularly concerned<\/strong>\u00a0about the revocation and\/or suspension of the licences of several lawyers in Azerbaijan, including\u00a0Fuad Agayev,\u00a0Yalchin Imanov<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Irada Javadova<\/a>.<\/p>\n
