Reza Khandan was convicted of membership of a criminal organisation and criminal conspiracy in connection with the design and distribution of pins bearing the following phrase: \u201cI am opposed to the compulsory wearing of the hijab\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The date of her arrest matches the planned entry into force of the new law, which further denies the rights of women and girls by introducing the death penalty, whipping, prison sentences and severe penalties for resistance to the compulsory wearing of the hijab.<\/p>\n<p>In a context where the punishment of family members is common practice, the Observatory expresses its full support for the lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and her family, in particular her husband Reza Khandan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Observatory calls<\/strong> for\u00a0all charges against Reza Khandan and his wife Nasrin Sotoudeh to be dropped and for them to stop being persecuted for their efforts to protect women, among others, from discrimination and humiliation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The OIAD salutes<\/strong>\u00a0Reza Khandan and Nasrin Sotoudeh\u2019s fight for human rights in Iran and reiterates its unwavering solidarity with them.<\/p>\n<p>[1]\u00a0Radio Farda,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.radiofarda.com\/a\/iran-activists-neysami-khandan-sentenced-to-prison\/29726523.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cTwo Prominent Rights Activists Sentenced To Six Years Each\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"Alerta1\"><\/a>IRAN: Reza Khandan, human rights defender and husband of Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh summoned to prison<\/h2>\n<p><strong>23rd February, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Observatory learns with great concern<\/strong>\u00a0from the media that on Tuesday 14th February 2023, Reza Khandan, human rights defender in Iran and husband of the lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, was summoned to prison within 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>The summons comes a few days after Nasrin Sotoudeh, on furlough from her own 38-year sentence, gave an interview to CNN in which she supports the protesters and calls on the Iranian authorities to release Farhad Meysami, doctor and human rights activist, who is in critical health condition following a hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p>Following Sotoudeh\u2019s interview, the Observatory has reasonable grounds to believe that Reza Khandan, could serve the remainder of a six years\u2019 imprisonment sentence, to which he was sentenced in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, in September 2018, Reza Khandan had been arrested and charged with\u00a0\u201cspreading propaganda against the system\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201ccolluding to commit crimes against national security\u201d, after posting online about his wife\u2019s unfair imprisonment in June 2018 and protesting against the\u00a0compulsory hijab policy.<\/p>\n<p>After 4 months in prison and his release on bail in December 2018, Reza Khandan was sentenced, in January 2019 by the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court to six years\u2019 imprisonment. His sentence had not been enforced, until this new summons.<\/p>\n<p>In a context where the punishment of relatives is a common practice, there is every reason to believe that this summon is linked to Nasrin Sotoudeh\u2019s public statements. This is not the first time that Reza Khandan has been a target of punitive measures by judicial and state security agencies in order to put pressure on his wife and their family.
