B\u00c9LARUS: Vitali Brahinets continues to serve his 8-year prison sentence<\/h2>\n

Vitali Brahinets is a Belarusian lawyer known for his defence of political prisoners in the Minsk region.<\/p>\n

On 23 May 2022, Brahinets was arrested at his home to \u201cverify his involvement in demonstrations\u201d. He was charged with inciting hatred, undermining national security, creating an extremist group and disturbing public order.<\/p>\n

After a trial behind closed doors, he was sentenced to\u00a0eight years\u2019 imprisonment in a medium-security penal colony<\/strong>\u00a0on 2 February 2023.<\/p>\n

Previously, in August 2022, Brahinets had been disbarred and deprived of his licence to practise as a lawyer for disciplinary reasons.<\/p>\n

On this International Day for Lawyers in Danger, we call for the immediate release of lawyer Vitali Brahinets.<\/p>\n
