{"id":18235,"date":"2024-07-03T14:28:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T14:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/philippines-mobilisation-pour-la-journee-internationale-du-droit-a-un-proces-equitable-a-manille-le-prix-ebru-timtik-decerne-a-lorganisation-nupl\/"},"modified":"2024-07-23T14:41:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T14:41:26","slug":"philippines-mobilisation-for-international-fair-trial-day-in-manila-nupl-wins-ebru-timtik-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/en\/philippines-mobilisation-for-international-fair-trial-day-in-manila-nupl-wins-ebru-timtik-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"PHILIPPINES: Mobilisation for International Fair Trial Day in Manila: NUPL wins Ebru Timtik prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Impunity for attacks on lawyers, prosecutors and judges, as well as smear campaigns against legal and human rights professionals in the Philippines, were highlighted in a panel discussion to mark\u00a0<strong>International Fair Trial Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Held on 14 June at the University of the Philippines in Manila, the event also highlighted the gaps in anti-terrorism legislation resulting from the so-called \u201cred-tagging\u201d system,, a series of defamation campaigns against legal professionals on social media and in public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The second panel discussion of the day, chaired by\u00a0<strong>Gonzalo S\u00e1enz Quilez, representing the International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD)<\/strong>, focused on the impact of anti-terrorism and anti-drug laws on the protection of lawyers, journalists, civil society, activists and other human rights defenders.<\/p>\n<p>The event was supported and attended by more than 100 legal associations from around the world, who pledged to highlight the importance of the right to a fair trial and the challenges posed by the rights of the defence.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also provided an opportunity to\u00a0<strong>award the \u201cEbru Timtik\u201d human rights prize<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>which this year went to NUPL (National Union of People\u2019s Lawyers),<\/strong>\u00a0which includes Czarina Musni, who has been monitored by the OIAD.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about the winning NUPL organisation, please read the\u00a0<strong>official announcement<\/strong>\u00a0of the award at the following link:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iftd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Announcement-of-the-2024-Ebru-Timtik-Award-Laureate.pdf\">https:\/\/iftd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Announcement-of-the-2024-Ebru-Timtik-Award-Laureate.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The prize is named after the Turkish lawyer who died in August 2020 after 238 days on hunger strike to protest against violations of the right to a fair trial in her country.\u00a0 The prize is awarded each year on International Fair Trial Day (IFTD) to those who have shown commitment and sacrifice in defending the right to a fair trial.
