{"id":18277,"date":"2024-07-05T14:55:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-05T14:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/communique-de-loiad-denoncant-les-menaces-a-lencontre-davocats-francais-signataires-dune-tribune-contre-le-rassemblement-national\/"},"modified":"2024-07-23T15:11:54","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:11:54","slug":"oiad-statement-denouncing-threats-against-french-lawyers-who-signed-an-op-ed-against-the-rassemblement-national-national-rally-far-right-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/en\/oiad-statement-denouncing-threats-against-french-lawyers-who-signed-an-op-ed-against-the-rassemblement-national-national-rally-far-right-party\/","title":{"rendered":"OIAD statement denouncing threats against French lawyers who signed an op-ed against the Rassemblement National (National Rally \u2013 far-right party)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD) strongly condemns the very serious threats published on 3 July 2024 on the far-right website RESEAU LIBRE, calling for the elimination of a number of lawyers who signed an op-ed in the run-up to the French parliamentary elections in June-July 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The far-right group openly threatened the French lawyers who signed the letter, describing them as \u201clawyers to be eliminated\u201d, and \u201cto be sent to a ditch and a stadium\u201d, adding that \u201c[a] vast majority of lawyers need to be neutralised\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD vigorously condemns the dissemination of these hate messages against a profession that stands as a watchdog for freedoms and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD is deeply concerned by these events and condemns the intimidation of lawyers in France.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD recalls that \u201c<strong><em>lawyers like other citizens are entitled to freedom of expression, belief, association and assembly<\/em><\/strong><em>. In particular, they shall have the right to\u00a0<strong>take part in public discussion of matters concerning the law<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>administration of justice\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0<strong>promotion and protection of human rights<\/strong>\u00a0and to join or form local, national or international organizations and attend their meetings, without suffering professional restrictions by reason of their lawful action or their membership in a lawful organization<\/em>\u201d (Principle 23[1]).<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD also recalls article 19, paragraphs 1 and 2, of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states that \u201c<em>1.\u00a0<strong>Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference<\/strong>. 2.\u00a0<strong>Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression<\/strong>; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and\u00a0<strong>impart information and ideas of all kinds<\/strong>, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art,\u00a0<strong>or through any other media of his choice<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD expresses its full solidarity and support to the threatened lawyers and to all the representative bodies of the French Bar.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD fully supports any action taken by the Conseil National des Barreaux (CNB), the Paris Bar Association and all French bar associations.<\/p>\n<p>The OIAD seeks the investigation and punishment of those responsible for these serious threats, as well as the protection of the lawyers threatened, with the necessary guarantees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/protect-lawyers.org\/en\/oiad-statement-denouncing-threats-against-french-lawyers-who-signed-an-op-ed-against-the-rassemblement-national-national-rally-far-right-party\/#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD) strongly condemns the very serious threats published on 3 July 2024 on the far-right website RESEAU LIBRE, calling for the elimination of a number of lawyers who signed an op-ed in the run-up to the French parliamentary elections in June-July 2024.
