2024: Iran

2024: Iran

On 24 January 2024, the 14th International day for Lawyers in Danger will be held, dedicated to the legal profession in Iran. Since 2009, this World Day has been marked in several cities, countries and continents around the world on 24 January. On this day, in 1977, we commemorate the “Atocha Massacre“, in which four colleagues were murdered in Madrid, Calle Atocha 55.

This is an opportunity to draw the attention of civil society and public authorities to the threats facing Iranian colleagues in the exercise of their profession. The Observatory is taking action by launching this campaign: help us make the most of it!

WHY IRAN?

  • 38: the number of years in prison that lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to for defending human rights.
  • +66: The number of defence lawyers arrested by the Iranian security forces.
  • +537: the number of Iranians killed by the security forces during the demonstrations.

Find out more about the situation of the legal profession in Iran by consulting the OIAD BROCHURE available in Farsi, French, English, Spanish, Italian and German. By reading this document, you will discover the current context and organisation of the legal profession in Iran, identifying the control exercised by the authorities over the Iranian Bar and the attacks suffered by lawyers specialising in the defence of human rights.
