Iran: The iranian lawyer Mohammad Ali Dadkhah has been arrested and sent to prison to serve a sentence that was handed down more than ten years ago

1 August 2022

Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, a prominent iranian lawyer and human rights activist, has been arrested and sent to Evin Prison to serve a sentence that was handed down more than ten years ago for allegedly trying to overthrow the ruling islamic regime.

Mohammad Ali Dadkhah had been on parole since 2013.

He has defended numerous political prisoners in Iran including a christian pastor sentenced to death for apostasy and is a founding member of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHCR), alongside Nobel Peace Prize Winner Shirin Ebadi. Since the disputed presidential elections in June 2009, several co-founders and members of the DHRC have been imprisoned, including lawyer Abdolfattah Soltani and journalist Abdolreza Tajik.

Taking place in a context of increased pressure on the iranian civil society, the Observatory is concerned about this arrest and strongly condemns it.

The Observatory calls on the Iranian authorities to respect the fundamental rights of the currently imprisoned lawyers and will remain supporting our Iranian colleagues.
