BELARUS: Lawyer Aljaksei Barodka disbarred and jailed

Belarusian lawyer Aljaksei Barodka has been detained since 2023 for political reasons. He was first detained for 15 days on the basis of an administrative report, and then re-arrested as a defendant in a criminal case.

Following his arrest, he was deprived in absentia of his lawyer’s licence and his profile was removed from the website of the National Bar Council of Belarus.

His trial proceeded at an accelerated pace; on 15 May 2023, Aliaksei was sentenced to prison for „incitement to social hatred“ and is serving time in a medium security colony.

On this International Advocacy Day at Risk, we call for the immediate release of lawyer Aljaksei Barodka.
