SUDAN: Joint submission by the OIAD to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review on Sudan
The OIAD, Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L) and the Sudanese Defenders Centre for Legal Aid (SDCLA) have submitted an alternative report as part of the fourth cycle of Sudan’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
In this report, the organisations highlight the impact of the armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been ongoing since April 2023, on the legal profession and access to justice.
In a context of a major humanitarian crisis and the partial collapse of judicial institutions, Sudanese lawyers are exposed to serious violations of their rights, including killings, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances and reprisals linked to the exercise of their professional duties. This contribution calls for the protection of lawyers, respect for the fundamental guarantees of the rule of law, and the implementation of Sudan’s international human rights commitments.
