Date of the report: July 2024
The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger has submitted an alternative report to the 48th session of the 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council on Iran.
Since the death of Jîna Mahsa Amini in detention, the protests that swept Iran in September 2022 have led to an increase in human rights violations. The Iranian authorities have responded with greater repression, targeting protesters and their lawyers, many of whom are committed to human rights.
The OIAD made a number of recommendations in the context of Iran’s UPR, including the need to strengthen the protection of lawyers, who are often targeted because of their commitment, and to ensure the genuine independence of the Iranian Bar. The OIAD also stressed the importance of putting an end to political interference in legal affairs, in order to guarantee an impartial and fair judicial system.
